Stewart Smith was a life-long Boro fan, former chair of the MFC Foundation and a dear friend to the Tees Valley Community Foundation. Following his sad passing in April 2021, funeral donations were to be collected and donated by TVCF, and as a promise to Stewart’s wife, Susan, the funds would be doubled and given to a cause close to Stewart’s heart.
The Foundation was delighted to honour him and provide a legacy by sponsoring the inaugral Stewart Smith Memorial Trophy.
This event gives children and youn g people a chance to experience the beautiful game, to be fit and healthy, and to experience teamwork and success.
Stewart’s values, vision in the business world and his passion for his football club was of huge benefit to the Teesside community, so it was fitting that teams came from far and wide to take part.
The event, at the MFC Foundation’s Herlingshaw Centre, was spread over two days and several age groups; 68 teams made up of almost 550 players celebrated contested trophies.
Stewart’s widow, Susan, travelled from her home in Newcastle to present the prizes and simply said: “Stewart would have loved this.”
