Community Garden Is The Genesis Of Improved Health And Wellbeing

What was needed?

Tees Valley Community Foundation connects those who want to give back or establish a legacy with those who are passionate about making a difference to the community. TVCF has provided community grant funding and mentoring support to thousands of projects across Teesside for many years, supporting vital groups and charities in that time.

The Genesis Project is one of those community projects which really captures the spirit of what we do.  Attached to St Oswald’s Church in Grove HIll, Middlesbrough, this community garden and offers a range of activites to help alleviate deprivation, including a food bank and an eco-shop.

How we helped

Thanks to funding from TVCF, the group has developed this community garden within a large outdoor space attached to the church hall’s garden.

One of the project volunteers had the idea to develop it into a garden and wellbeing space with an allotment, to help local people reduce their stress and improve their health. Project lead, Sally Middleton, agreed it would be hugely beneficial for people to spend time in the nature in the garden and provide an educational benefit to some of their younger service users.

This has since evolved into growing vegetables to be sold in the eco-shop, which has become really popular and more and more people have asked to become involved.

The space has raised beds, willow arches, poly-tunnels and a wildlife pond; it’s very important to the organisation that everything is as naturally sustainable as possible so they use plant cuttings and waste products to create wildlife habitats, such as dead hedges and bug hotels.

They also have a wildflower space and have recently acquired additional outdoor space, which will allow them to accommodate all who wish to volunteer for them. Great work Sally, and your team of volunteers!
